ISO 45001 Clauses and Continuous Improvement — Occupational Health & Safety
Introduction
ISO 45001 turns safety into daily practice. The clauses link together so your team can find hazards, control risk, check results, and keep improving. Think Plan Do Check Act. Clause 4 to 10 follow that loop and make it real on the floor.
How do the clauses fit together?
Clause 4 asks you to know your context and define scope. Map who can affect safety and what activities fall inside the system. Clause 5 puts leadership and worker participation at the center. Leaders set policy and remove blockers. Workers take part in decisions and report issues without fear. Clause 6 is planning. You identify hazards, assess risk, and set clear objectives with actions and owners. Clause 7 is support. You provide people, skills, tools, and controlled information so the plan can work. Clause 8 is operation. You run controls, manage change, control contractors, and prepare for emergencies. Clause 9 is performance evaluation. You monitor results, audit the system, and hold a management review that ends with decisions and actions. Clause 10 is improvement. You fix problems at the root and capture ideas that raise the bar next cycle.
Turning clauses into a daily loop
Start each week with a short review of risks and open actions. Walk the area and check controls that matter most. Close small fixes fast and log proof. Share one page of indicators like incidents, near misses, training due, and action closeout. Use toolbox talks to keep steps simple at the point of work. Feed what you learn into your next plan so the system moves forward month by month.
Certification flow in brief
Stage 1 checks your documents, scope, and readiness. Stage 2 tests how things work in the field and in records. If there are findings you close them with actions and dates. A surveillance visit follows each year. Recertification is usually every three years.
