7 Steps for Handling Waste According to ISO 14001 and the Plan-Do-Check-Act Model
Introduction
Good waste control is a core part of an ISO 14001 system. The Plan-Do-Check-Act model gives a simple loop you can use every day. Plan your controls. Do the work. Check the results. Act on the gaps. The seven steps below follow that loop so your site can cut risk and keep clear records.
Why PDCA fits waste management?
Waste streams change with seasons and shifts. PDCA helps you keep pace. You plan actions for each stream. You run controls and training. You check data and legal proof. You act on findings and raise the bar next cycle.
The 7 steps
-
Map your waste streams
List every stream by source. Include solids, liquids, recyclables, hazardous waste and special items like batteries and e-waste. Note volumes, containers and pick-up frequency. -
Know the rules and duties
Identify the laws, permits and local rules that apply to each stream. Keep copies on file. Set simple do’s and don’ts for staff and contractors. -
Set targets and assign roles
Define goals like less waste to landfill or better segregation. Name owners for each area. Agree on simple KPIs such as kg per unit, recycling rate or missed pick-ups. -
Segregate and control at the source
Use clear labels and color coding. Keep lids closed. Prevent mixing. Store chemicals and hazardous waste in safe zones with spill kits and secondary containment. -
Approve vendors and track movements
Check the credentials of carriers and disposal partners. Keep manifests and receipts. Verify the final fate of waste so you know where it ends up. -
Measure and check
Record volumes, photos, and any spills. Audit bins and storage areas. Test emergency response with drills. Review incidents and near misses. Compare results with targets. -
Correct and improve
Fix root causes behind mix-ups or spills. Update signs, layouts or training where needed. Improve contracts or pick-up plans. Close actions and log proof.
